Basic Needs Program
With the establishment of this program 23 years ago, Longmont has one unified agency furnishing services formerly offered by various non-profit and religious groups. After an intake interview, professional caseworkers and trained volunteers provide emergency food, transportation, utilities, furniture, minor medical prescriptions, referrals for emergency shelter, and homeless-prevention help, including rent and utility assistance. Although services in the Basic Needs Program are typically provided in times of crisis, agency staff work in partnership with families to help them regain self-sufficiency.
Call Intake Office for appointment if your needs include rent, utilities, shelter, and/or prescriptions. Our priority is to assist families with children who are residents of the St. Vrain region. Assistance to households without children may be provided after a thorough assessment has been done and as resources permit. |

Success Stories - Laid off with medical bills
"Cushion the painful effects of hard blows by keeping enthusiasm going strong, even if by doing so requires struggle." - Norman Vincent Peale
Pat S. is a keen example of this wise saying. In spite of the hard blows she and her family have recently experienced, Pat has a zest for life and a hopeful attitude that radiates from her. Last year, Pat, Joe, and their son Anthony never thought they would have to ask for help. Joe had a good-paying job working as a project manager for an underground cable company when he was injured on the job. The day Joe returned home from surgery to repair the injury, he learned that he was laid off from the job. At the same point in time, Pat, who experiences intense pain from arthritis and other health conditions, needed urgent surgery. When registering for surgery, Pat discovered that Joe's former employer had dropped the family from the health insurance plan a month prematurely. Bills were mounting as the family waited for unemployment benefits to start. As Joe's last paycheck was used to pay for rent, no funds were left for utilities and food. The family was perilously close to a utility shutoff. In a talk with a utility representative, Pat was referred to the OUR Center.
The OUR Center caseworker was able to help with an emergency food voucher and by assisting with the amount needed to prevent the shutoff. In addition, while the family searched for affordable housing and a new job for Joe, the caseworker referred the family to other services for medical care and additional utility assistance. Pat describes the last few months as "difficult". Although in pain from surgery complications, she says in a hopeful, strong voice that "Life is getting better! We have moved to a smaller home now and Anthony did not have to change schools. Joe and I are healing and we're getting by." As with this family, the community safety net, of which the OUR Center is a link, provides a sense of hope and practical help for many families in financial crisis
